Eurofag here that doesn't want to go through all the bullshit to own guns that exist in my country.

I'm looking to buy a bow for SHTF (including hunting).

Will the Hoyt Ignite be any good? I've heard that many people say that compound bows are only good if you spend at least 1k on them and that everything else is shit.

Is this really true or should I get the Ignite?

I'm not a big fan of compounds, especially if you have the weird idea of staking life to one. If the string breaks there is no way to restring it without a press. Also, they're bulky and heavy for no real good reason.

I'd look into a modern take-down recurve bow and buy an arrow rest for it so you can use the cheap plastic fleched arrows. Mine weighs 1.4kg and it breaks down and fits in a laptop case.

Would a target recurve be any good? I've seen cheap Hoyt target recurves with foam core limbs, would these perhaps be too fragile for SHTF?

If you want something for SHTF that will fold up into a BOB, get a recurve with detachable limbs.

Hey, I personally wouldn't get the Ignite as a first compound bow. Its range of adjustability kind of indicates that it's targeted at the youth market and it gives up a bit of performance to get it (like most bows with that kind of adjustability do).

The one thing I like about it is the mass weight (3.6 pounds, pretty light), but aside from that it's a bit slow (300fps IBO is not all that quick) and maybe a tad short. 8" brace height doesn't help you out in the speed department at all.

The important thing about IBO speed is it's like a bank of potential - faster bow will shoot a heavier arrow faster than a slow bow. When your arrow is fast AND heavy (relative), you'll penetrate well and it'll reduce the impact of ranging errors.

As it sounds like people have alluded to, buy American. Asian knock-offs are god-awful. Find an archery shop, tell them you're looking for a hunting bow and see what they have in your price range. You may need to spend more than you were initially thinking. There are bows that fit the bill though - I live in Australia and you can pick up a PSE Stinger for around $500 (which would work - under 4 lbs, 315fps IBO, i know people who like them).

Frankly, no. Target bow limbs tend to be pretty weak and the bows themselves are fairly long. You'd have a brightly coloured, clearly branded, weak bow that's a pain in the ass to carry around the woods.

You want a hunting bow if you want to hunt, be it trad or compound. You'll have an easier time building enough skill to do so with a compound, but you're still looking at several months to a year of practice before you're that good (i.e. taking game at 30 metres and beyond with good ethical shot placement).

It would take a hell of a lot of shooting and abuse to brake a decent compound string. Also they are far smaller than any other type of bow, so i hardly see why you would consider them bulky.

If you're getting into this and you want to have any kind of level of proficiency, you've just got yourself a new sport and hobby. Ideally, get coached at the beginning - get your form right. Shoot scored rounds and push yourself to improve - look for field and 3D archery clubs (sounds relevant to your interests). Shoot every day if you can to keep in shape. Read up on bowhunting (check out "Hunting with the Bow and Arrow" by Saxton Pope). Learn to love it. Basically, you need to commit if you want to be good, and hunting with a bow is hard enough that you want to be as good as you can rather than scrape by at a minimum level of competence.

They're much more compact yeah, but comparatively heavy too. More stuff sticking out potentially, compared to a bare bow recurve as well, but then again not all that many folks shoot a 10" stabiliser on their hunting bow.
