Does /k/ do black powder? I recently bought an 1860 army and I wanted to know what i got myself into. Can anons post stories or other experiences,advise, etc.

1858 Remington is the best BP revolver by a long shot. You can change cylinders as quickly as speedloading a modern revolver.

If you want raw power, to this day the Colt Walker is the most powerful service pistol ever issued to the American Army.

Codys Lab on youtube has a video where he makes gunpowder from urine.

Black powder is great stuff. Dat tactical smokescreen.

The LeMat revolver has a fucking shotgun on it as well as 9 chambers for regular lead.

Interesting history.

To start
Go to Walmart and but a fishing tackle box
You will need it to carry all the shit needed to load, shoot and clean a bp gun
Look into a loading stand. They are very helpful
Google plans and make your own.

well anon, i was dead set on getting the 1851 navy then i discovered about caliber conversions. I wanted to convert it because i can't legally own a handgun yet, so if thats your situation go ahead. but the 1860 army seems much easier to convert because the round is more readily available (.45LC). Just know that a conversion cylinder and possible ejector rod will cost more than the revolver. But it's damn worth it.

yeah, a buddy of mine is into BP revolvers, and he's telling me about cleaning it right after firing (at the end of the day). So can I just fire any diameter ball, or does it have to be between .451-.454 for a 44 cal revolver.

Once you have your tackle box you will need

Percussion caps
Corn meal
Bore butter
Wonder wads
A tool to put the caps n the nipples
( because those little bitches are hard to hold)
A nipple wrench
Brass patches to remove lead from the barrel
And all of the cleaning supplies
You can use soap and water with a brush.

You need to compress the load for better accuracy
If the powder charge is less half of the volume of the cylinder then you top it off with either corn meal or a wonder wad. Cornmeal is cheaper
There is also a theory that the pressure of a half full cylinder is greater than a full cylinder and can cause a failure.
It also helps prevent a chain fire, when you shoot one load and the other loads go too.
If a spark gets past the bullet, then it will die with the cornmeal or wad and not ignight the powder.

I started with an 1858, got hooked for life. Got after that a Colt Walker, a silver engraved 1858, pedersoli blue ridge percussion rifle and then, this one is my fave, the howdah. Replaced the nipples with ones that use musket caps.

Your going to have to do some work on it if you want it to shoot reliably. Start by filling in the safety notch on the face of the hammer(it tends to snag caps) and replace the nipples with aftermarket ones.

Hey, I just ordered 5 of those 1860 Army's from Cabella's for my Groomsmen.

They arte all covered in some sort of grease, I assume to protect against rust and corrosion.

What's the best way to clean these so when I present them to the guys its not a greasy mess?

They are going to be hanging on a wall 99% of the time. I think two or three of the guys might taking it shooting once or twice for fun.

I tried wiping them off with a cloth but they are still way greasy.

Mineral spirits. Go to Ace hardware and get a bottle of paint thinner and a fuckton of paper towels and maybe some Q-tips and clean them. Outside. Then lightly oil the action and you're good to go.

If you want class and are OK with tools, order a kit from TrackoftheWolf dot com. They have kits for everything from French fusils to Pennsylvania jaegers.

Midway between the two are the Indian imports. They are heavy and clubby but affordable, and the locks are hand forged so they spark great. If you buy one, tear it apart and sand off a pound of wood, then apply a nice tung oil finish. Immerse the steel parts in lemon juice or soda pop overnight to give them a nice patina, too.

LGS might have them, they'll almost certainly have black powder, wads, caps and bullets.

You can also buy them online. Cabelas has some traditional rifles.

I got my Pietta steel frame Navy for $200 from cabelas. the brass frame is 50 bux cheaper than that. Really good price, I think.

My only problem is that I cannot remove the wedge pin to disassemble it. I bought a Thompson Center wedge pin puller but it doesn't fit at all. I've tried placing a clothespin and hammering it (it broken), then a screen driver, but nothing.

And I already returned the first Navy I got because it was the exact same problem, I thought maybe that one was extremely tight. But this one I got in exchange is exactly the same.

Do I need to take it to a gunsmith or something? I'm not sure what to do anymore.

I don't know about Pietta but I've never had a problem getting the wedge out on and of my original or Uberti Colts. If they are stuck I just give them a couple taps with a small brass hammer I have and they come out.

My black powder revolver is a modern 38 special, because I loaded some one time for fun. Don't do this if you hate cleaning guns or enjoy seeing your target after a few rounds. Kinda fun though, makes me want to ride around on a motorcycle shootin at injuns.
