Is it viable to hunt purely with your hands or hand-heal weapons? Do people do this anywhere for sport?

Seems INFINITELY more sporting than using guns or arrows.

If you want to get ancient make and use your own atlatl. Doesn't get more ancient and sporting than that, generally you won't get close enough with knifes because prey would run away. Only predators would stay close like your pic

Well, seal clubbing is actually just a way to manage the populations.

The Canadians eventually developed a dedicated seal gun for it, but because of the Navy SEALs, it'd be a pain in the ass to google it.

The one guy would hunt deer by running after them until they collapsed from exhaustion then he'd brain it with a stick or something.

In practical terms, you could probably hunt moose with a spear. They're pretty fearless and they'll walk right up on you out of curiosity.

I suppose that'd be the best way of employing mechanic advantage, without resorting to 'stored energy' (whether tension in a bowstring or gunpowder or whatever).

The whole point of being human is using your brain and thumbs to gain an advantage over prey. Less effort is good for gathering resources. Hunting for sport is stupid, it's basically adrenaline rush. Don't get me wrong I like plinking deer but this whole "kill for honorable sport" is retarded.

I read somewhere before that humans have incredible stamina compared to other animals. While not fast, out two-legged gait is very energy efficient, and we're very good at getting rid of heat. The implication being that out ancestors hunted something like african wild dogs: we'd simply chase after prey at a slowish speed relentlessly until they collapsed from exhaustion.

Is this actually true?

It's how we used to do it. One of the most ancient methods is just following something till it can't get away anymore.

Humans are more patient and smarter than other animals so abstract tracking is possible.

Yeah, it's pretty well established that humans were 'endurance hunters'. Besides the Russian guy in the article, a lot of indigenous peoples in Africa still hunt like that, too. Some group in Mexico does that. Forgot their name. They run with these extremely unergonomic wooden sandals like that.

I can't find the source, but I recall reading once of a man and a horse being put on a several-day race to test relative running capability. IIRC, the outcome was something like:
Day 1: Horse smokes man.
Day 2: Man catches up to horse.
Day 3: Man pulls ahead of horse, horse is utterly exhausted and has to be pulled out of race.

Also, there appears to be a man-v-horse marathon where runners have in fact beat horses (usually only by minutes, but still.)

it's way harder then with a bow which is harder than with a gun. you can shoot an animal with a gun badly too and have it die in horrible agony unable to retrieve it which is very shameful.
