So my dad is ~65 and his FOID has been expired for quite a few years. He owned two shotguns, a .22 rifle, and a .22 handgun. A couple years ago my sister was an idiot and let the local PD search the house for an unrelated case, and upon finding his firearms they asked him for his FOID, which was expired, so they took his firearms. My dad renewed his foid, but is a retired car theif and gets really nervous around cops and doesn't know how to get his guns back. I asked a cop and he said we have to contact the states attorney. Has anyone else had to deal with anything like this? Any help on what the process is like or how long it takes or if we even have a chance getting them back if they haven't been auctioned yet? We live in southern Illinois.
