Sounds like you live in a shithole, if they react like you say, OP.

Standard safety: carry your weapons in a kitbag: ski bags are good for longswords, hockey bags work well for rapier. Dont store your mask and gloves in the same bag, moisture from sweat will corrode the steel.

Describe it as "historical fencing", and then explain its learning the fencing techniques that were used in the past, and you dont get people saying shit like "dont kill me".
