Hello /k/, I am reading a book and it basically says that the Global Hawk is fucking awful compared to something like the U-2 and can't even fly in bad weather

Is this true? Is the machine a piece of shit? Is its only advantage being unmanned and having a longer flight time? Talk to me about the Global Hawk, /k/

What advantage does the U-2 have? It's hard to fly and isn't something that's meant to be maneuverable or fast or be able to attack. So why the fuck would you replace something like that with an unmanned platform?

The reason I have heard is that you can have the Dron on station for longer. However the way somebody else explained it was that there's no point having it there for longer because the more times it flies back and forth the less new, important stuff it will pick up and this also increase the likelihood of it being intercepted. Two to three passes in a U-2 not only gives them MORE data, because it carries a more advanced payload, but it can perform other function such as act as a dat link repeater, or other comms link.

The Global Hawk doesn't need to be good because it's cheap to own and operate and they have satellite recon anyways.

Spy planes can't see through storm clouds either and they're always getting shot down or forced to land and their pilots get turned into political bargaining chips. It's not worth it.

Not really as good as data from a spy plane, I mean the programme exists for a reason. Are you suggesting both the U-2 and Global Hawk are axed in favour of satelites?

But they can avoid them. The Global Hawk is so shit that it doesn't even know if it's flying into a storm. And if it does, it's absolutely fucked. They can't fly for roughly half the year due to the shit Pacific Weather.

It's really all about whether you want to trade lesser capability for less risk. U-2s are not invincible, and there have been a number of incidents that have seen them shot down with the pilots captured.

That said, Global Hawk is a pretty old drone. One of the first put into service. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a new one being developed, like RQ-180.

RQ-4 Global Hawk crashes since 2007 ---- 4

During the development of the aircraft there were also a further 4 crashes. So since 1998 (17 years) it has had 8 crashes resulting in loss of airframe.
