Hay /k/, I was wondering if a shield would be practical for home defense? I know it wouldn't stop bullets but I figured against a guy with a bat or screwdriver or knife, a shield might be a handy thing to have just in case.

I know it wont stop a bullet. But in any other situation otherwise it seems like a solid idea.

My state has no stand your ground laws or castle doctrine. If I shoot somebody that wasn't already attacking me than I go to jail.

Breaking into my place doesn't count as attacking me. I would have to rely on non-lethal ways to deter a burglar like pepper spray if he isn't actually attacking me.

buy a better front door, add a strike plate to the door, buy a top quality deadbolt and use 4" deck screws to install the boltplate. Get hurricane glass and windows imbedded into concrete or at least cover windows in 3m anti shatter window screens. Have a real alarm system too, even though it is worthless it at least limits a criminal to 10-20minutes in your house. Etc. Do this, also buy a gun and shoot anyone performing a home invasion.

MA. I can't fight back unless I believe that I am under attack and I have nowhere to retreat to. Its actually kinda of like I have to prove I was under attack rather than the other way around.

make your home defensible and hard to break into, plan to kill anyone performing a home invasion, and have an attorney on retainer to call right after you call the police about the dead negro on your living room floor to guide you through exactly what your statement to the police needs to be.

Shield is worst possible option. Unwieldy in a house in the dark, useful mostly against melee weapons the intruders are not likely to have. If you don't carry a weapon, then they'll just grab the shield and wrestle you to the ground.

Get thee a handgun. If you absolutely can't but somehow your country hasn't outlawed butter knives yet, a long knife or small sword might be your medieval equivalents. Pick something convenient to keep by your bedside, easy to carry and use one-handed, that is useful even in tight quarters, and is comparatively simple to use.

Most medieval weapons/kit were built for use in battle against armed and armored soldiers. Hence are massive overkill inappropriate for home use.
