Why is short barrel + long grip such a popular combination these days for full size pistols? Why do so few manufacturers go for the universally beloved 4" barrel / 15rnd frame design of the Glock 19?

I have to admit, the balance is excellent, but I can't help but feel the pistol would benefit from a grip about 1/2" shorter.
