I usually just put my light in my left hand and let my left hand ride on the frame of the pistol just under the slide on the left side of the gun.
You can always try that cross grip, but I find I don't shoot as well when I do that.
You could go completely one handed and hold the light up and to the left to try keep the light source away from your body and potential boolits, but I find it awkward to do it that way.
There's another technique where you grip the gun normally and put the light between your fingers on the under side of the gun. Couldn't find a good pictures. I don't like this though because it's hard to hold onto the light if SHTF and you go live fire or someone attacks you.
The most tacticool option is a light on the gun. It works great. The only thing you have to be careful of is that you don't turn your gun into a flashlight. It's for target identification and confirmation, not a flashlight.
