I remember there was some Egyptian TARMAC hostage rescue situation that ended in few dozen passengers getting gunned down.

The Russians are arguable, Beirut in 1985 they had who the fuck ever take a bunch of hostages. Spetznas arrived, I.D the guys, track down their family, send them the mutilated body parts of them. No more political hostages on domestic soil for like 20 years. Worth it?
