Eurofag nogunz here. I'm thinking about buying a Remington 1858 or a Colt 1851 navy. What would you choose?

I'd go for the 1858 Remington, more durable frame and extremely easy to remove the cylinder. If you didn't mind having a tiny hand grenade sitting around you could swap cylinders pretty fast in an 1858. Also it has a longer sight radius and you can get models with target sights that the 1851 by its very nature can't mount.

Much more sturdy and better designed.

Pedersoli makes an amazing 1858 pattern for target shooting. They say they've modified it for the best accuracy possible.

An Italian company is doing reproductions if I remember correctly, I don't know about the quality of the products though. It sounded a bit like Pedersen, can't find it right now.

The Remington 1858 is the best black powder revolver, mostly because it is so common and you can change the cylinder very quicly. Get a steel frame, it's stronger and if you make a trip to the US you could find one of those "conversion cylinders" allowing you to fire .44 magnum through it.

OP, if you were to get a conversion make sure not to use a brass-framed revolver.

Brass is fine for BP but not safe for cartridge conversions. Just FYI

Get a steel framed Colt if you don't mind doing some work on it. They work fine once you've filled in the safety notch on the hammer and replaced the nipples with aftermarket ones.

So at my range couple guys fire off black powder guns. They take forever to load them, and obviously blow the load nearly as fast as anybody else.

How the fuck did people like Buffalo Bill use this to any extent? After couple seconds of firefight you're out of freakin ammo.

Did they carry spare cylinders? Spare guns? Or did the Hollywood lie, and firefights devolved nearly instantly to throwing rocks at each other?
