Hey /k/ what kind of hearing protection do you use?

I was at the range this saturday and even though I was wearing some hearing protection, I noticed there was a faint ringing in my ears. Now this might just be the mild tinnitus I've had since I was a kid, but I'm a little worried that what I wear for protection might not be the best for shooting.

Any suggestions?

Ah okay. Those aren't my muffs but I'll send a pic in a bit. The ones I use are the kind that lawnmower operators wear.

Why does every fucking ear thread have to have these idiots?

Can anyone recommend good electronic plugs? Every time I see electronic ears mentioned they're muffs.

Leightning L2Fs, decent class 5+ really. Theyre actually for my job on the flight line but useful for range too. Prefer electronic ones though

I'm a nogunz in a cityscape but I use the Peltor X5A. They're bulky but they're gr8 for studying and sleeping through a ruckus.

I'm practically deaf in my right ear from Iraq. I fire weapons right, issue ear protection sucked, and somehow explosions always happened on my right side. Somehow, counterintuitively to me, my left ear is almost perfectly fine.

Nah youd have trouble with locating sounds wouldnt you?
Attenuated hearing in both ears would be preferable id think. But i have good hearing from wearing plugs/defenders for everything as my job relies on my hearing

I'd have imagined that the left ear isn't far enough from the right ear that explosions would impact both equally, but the tests disagree, so there you have it. For firing ranges we only used plugs, and I did some shooting plugless because of operational exigenices. I triple up now: electronic peltors, cheap plugs and a can. I even put "hearing protection" on my form 4

yeah, I had to cross out a lotta my (relatively poor) options because of deafness. I can't bitch because the VA gave me 100% for other stuff, so I'm more than compensated

I bought a pair off amazon, and I can't get them to seal. The cord gets in the way of the metal bars and tilts the cup away from my head. No amount of adjusting can get around it.

I use pic related, instead. Nothing is too loud outdoors. It is annoying during cease fires, since most people take off their muffs and I can't pull these out and quickly put them back in.

Bought the "clear armor" 34nrr muffs after the last thread where a guy recommended them. Got em today and used em to put the finishing touches with the angle grinder on my popper target.

If I'm shooting outside I just use ear plugs. A lot of people don't realize this but cheap disposable foam earplugs actually block sound better than muffs. You should only be using muffs if you need to double up, otherwise you get better protection from plugs anyway.

i sued to only wear plugs and at the outdoor range, i noticed no discomfort. but i then noticed my ears were more sensitive to loud noise, like a vaccuum cleaner.

instant hearing damage begins around 120 dB

guns can go from 140 to 170 dB based on the firearm/ammunition and enviornment

Threshold of pain is around 140dB

With all that in mind:
foam ear inserts can be 20-30 dB protection depending on brand and type.
Ear muffs, both electronic and non-electronic can be around 20-35 dB

If you're still following the math, the best course of action is to double up. Shooting outside is a bit more forgiving on the ears, but you absolutely need to double up indoors, unless you don't really care about hearing damage.

Just get the yellow ones, EAR is the brand name I think. They come in a couple diff sizes, as well as straight cylinders that actually seal really well

I use howard leigh impact sports on top of surefire plugs. I use Smith Aegis Echos so they don't fuck up the seal.

I want to buy some Sordins so I feel can be HSLD though. Also those gel pads feel like sex. Like you have a wet, squishy vagina sitting on your ears

and this isn't right. the NRR may be around 30-35 db, but in actuality, depending on the plugs/muffs used, you only reduce noise by about half of the rated db reduction.

I forget where I saw the chart, but it was something like foam plugs usually only block about 30% of what they're rated for, silicone plugs do something like 50%, and muffs do about 70%.

So I went to an indoor pistol/shotgun range and only used foam plugs.
Some guy told me to get muffs because they are better and plugs are not enough.
On the inside I laughed at him because I fired a 7.62 MG with nothing but plugs and already ruined my hearing by shooting 200 rounds of 9mm unprotected.

Is he right though?
