Buying first gun

Took a beginner pistol course through the NRA a couple months ago. Been thinking lately of heading over to a local shop and getting my first gun. Not sure how this process works, so I'm kinda nervous about going. What can I expect?

It's like buying a car when not knowing shit about cars. Go online, do your research, see what kind of actions, calibers, and sizes you like best, walk in, look at their prices, compare it to online prices, buy the gun either online or in person, take it to the range and enjoy. If you don't know what you're looking for, rent a few guns for the range and find out what feels best. I absolutely love sigs, and love DA/SA without safeties more, so I thoroughly enjoy guns like the Sig P224/226/229, HK P2000 SK, etc.

the $100 intro class at my local range let me shoot all kinds of guns & calibers 22 32 380 38 10m 40 45 not a ton of rounds thru each but you got a choice

op you need to decide what you want to do with this gun you are going to buy

rifle ? hunting ? handgun ? concealed carry ?

if you walk into gun store like the noob you are at best the person will ask you similar questions about your use & budget

if you get a handgun then plan on spending another $500 or so for range time ammo for training 6 months before you're ready to use it with some chance of hitting the target in a scary situation

We used a Glock 17 for the pistol course. Seemed fine to me, but then again, I haven't had anything else to compare it to.

Basically looking for a home defense + range gun. I don't have any plans to conceal carry.

If online get a find a FFL/Gun store to transfer it to.
Pick up gun
Fill out 4473, VA State Police paper, and have a documented paper that has your address on it. So mail or something.

The Glock 17 is an excellent gun. Kind of like the Honda Accord of guns with the Glock 19 being the Civic. They are abundant with a vast aftermarket, though there are alternatives that are either cheaper or have features you might prefer (different ergonomic layout, manual safety, hammer-fired as opposed to striker-fired, etc.).

But as a point of reference the Glocks are a great place to start since they are by now one of the benchmarks by which almost all automatic pistols are compared against. The other being a well-tuned 1911.

I specifically tried to avoid the Glock when I first bought a handgun and I owned several but ended up with a Glock 23 as my preferred do-everything pistol, and a .357 Ruger revolver as my favorite.
Don't pass up revolvers, you might find you like em and they're just fine for HD/blasting paper.

Hey OP if you're heading over to VA Arms, I think they pretty much have the best prices for guns in nova unless you find a nice deal in a pawn shop somewhere. The staff there is pretty nice too and won't completely blow you off like in other places.
I overpaid by ~$100 for my first gun from NOVA firearms back during the hookening and looking back I think I could have found a better deal/service literally anywhere else.

I'll have to check them out if I get a chance, I'm close to Alexandria so every gun store that's not a big box store is at least a 30-40 minute drive for me.
Surprisingly I haven't been to blue ridge arsenal yet, Sharpshooters is closer and usually not crowded so I usually go there even though the range is a little dank, but I don't mind.
