All modern ships are unarmored. Only aluminum and kevlar liners ontop of a degaussed steel hull.

This is why you defend against missiles by shooting them down of spoofing them with decoys.

Against gunfire, though, nothing helps, aside of hoping the enemy fire-control is shit and cant hit you. But if it does, you always have at least some sub-components damage.

And those WW2 ships often took a lot of pounding before being sunk.

Forcing enemy missiles to mount HEAT warheads instead of HE warheads would significantly reduce damage

Doesn't mean ALL naval ships should be armored, but there should be SOME that are capable of going within 200 miles of hostiles

Depends on the maker, really. Not all US vessels are as well made as those from Bath. Ingalls had their fare share of problems, with the Navy rejecting their shit and telling them to improve them.

China's similair. The Shanghai Yards are generally top-notch, even to european standards, while the Guangzhou and Dalian yards still have way to go.

Armor is pointless on anything w/o a nuclear power plant. Reason is speed and endurance avoid way more than armor can. Imagine if a cruiser can only go 25 knts and takes 7 boat lengths to change it's cardinal direction. Now imagine on that goes 40 and can slip sideways. What is going to avoid a cruise missile and air attack better with last minute maneuvers and increasing the time attackers take to close to attack distance? The 40 knt cruiser.

Boats with nuke plants can just use armor plating wherever since they don't need to worry too much about fuel consumption and engine power.

Why does the US even care about the islands ?

They have to belong to someone, so why not just let the nation with the biggest dick in a region have them.

I suggest you look into the history of damage control in the RN at the time and you'll see they had the USN come in and completely overhaul their system. The RN lost 6 ships in the Falklands war and some to less than an exocet hit. The main reason was because of shitty aluminum construction, the other reason was outdated damage control techniques. No one in the world comes close to the US navy in damage control- thats a fact recognized everywhere, hate to break it to you... But lessons learned in WW2 in the pacific have not been forggoten and are taken damned seriously.

It's funny you should mention Thresher (but not Scorpion, of course, because it's babby's first lesson about how Navies actually run), as it is literally the exception that proves the rule. Consider the SUBSAFE program that grew out of that, Rickover's general autism and then the fact that the USN has only ever lost 2 nuke boats, and those STILL constitute the only two USN incidents involving nuclear reactor loss, breach or contamination. When you look at the USN subops tempo for the last 70 years, that is nothing short of miraculous. Compare to the Soviet/Russian sub service for reference.
