>>27715140>How difficult would it be to take down a plane using small arms fire?Low, slow flying aircraft? Possible.
>Could it be done on a big scale? Not sure what you mean but if you're asking if it's a practical way to repeatedly deter or destroy aircraft, the answer is no.
>How much planning would be involved in sniping a plane out of the sky? With a single bullet? You'd need to know the exact velocity of the aircraft - speed and direction. Then you'd need to calculate a shot that would not only intercept the aircraft, but hit it in a vital area - pilot, engine, etc. You'd probably have to do all of these calculations using GPS co-ordinates long before you set up the rifle. Then comes the matter of timing: A 737 is travelling 80m/s at takeoff, which is realistically the only time you'd be close enough to both put a bullet in a flying aircraft with a small arm; the aircraft is roughly 40m long, which means that it's completely traversed your point of aim within 1/2 a second. You'd then need to know exactly when to pull the trigger so your bullet will intercept the plane; you need a visual queue of some kind, which might be impossible to find. This whole thing also rests on a few assumptions: there is no deviation in the projected velocity of the aircraft beyond a few meters of displacement and a few m/s, and the weather is the same as in your modelling of the shot.
tl;dr you can't snipe a plane with a fiddy
