Well I just (followed out orders and) moved from a fascist state to one that truly respects my freedom.
llinois/California to Georgia

Now I want to buy a shotgun and take the wardroom out for a game of skeet & trap.

I've shot plenty before, but it was always me borrowing the gun. Now I want one.
My dad has a Remington 870 and it seems pretty good for a first time buy.

What do y'all think?

OP, if you're looking for a cheap shotgun, you may also want to look at the Remington 500 series, they are pretty good too.

How much money do you have to spend? Do yo want it for only clays or other purposes too? Do you have a preferred action type?

On the cheap end you have your H&R Pardner Pumps and Mossberg Maverick 88's. They're cheap and work but aren't great quality. Also the Savage Stevens 320 is good mention here as well as cheap ass used double barrels. If you want a cheap autoloader Tristar is about your only option.

Middle-of-the-road is going to be your classics; Mossberg 500 / 590 series and Remington 870's are staples. You also get a few out liars like the Winchester 1300. Modestly-priced double barrels and a few affordable autoloaders appear here too, like the Mossberg 930 and Remington Versa.

Your higher tiers are made up of expensive shotguns and name brands. Over/unders are popular, as are Browning A5's, Benellis, etc. More money but more quality in this specific task.

As for barrel length, 18-20" is your tactical / slug gun lengths. 22-24" is kind of a do-all, unspecific length, turkey, deer, if you only have one barrel make it this length. 26"+ is ideal for clay shooting. A lot of people get an 18" / 28" combo for the best versatility.

I bought my Mossberg 500 for 350 at my local range/shop and it came with both an 18 and 28 inch barrel included.. They even gave me a free session + discounted ammo which was nice.. NJ laws may be shit but the gun culture is nice.
