How did people like McVeigh and the Unabomber actually create their explosives? I don't understand how people can gather up supplies and actually create bombs capable of sufficient damage. I mean, there was even a group in British Columbia who managed to steal dynamite and TNT and blow up a factory in Ontario back in the 1980s.

I guess nowadays anyone can just hop onto Google and dig up infographics, but don't the authorities monitor shit like that? Also, general homemade weapons/explosives thread.

You greatly over estimate how hard it is to make a bomb. You can get everything you need to make half a dozen different kinds of explosives from Home Depot.

It's really not that hard to do.

Black powder is available over the counter, and that'll kill people in a pinch.

If you're something of a nigger, but not enough of a nigger to be using black powder devices, you could make acetone or hexamine peroxide with very basic, unregulated materials. The London Subway Bombers did this.

If you want to actually be a pro, you can make a nitration solution by adding sodium nitrate to high purity sulfuric acid (read: drain cleaner).

From there, pretty much anything you add to that solution will turn into an explosive. If you add hexamine (the little camping tablets), you get the active ingredient in C4. If you add glycerin, you get the active ingredient in dynamite (nitroglycerin is dangerous as fuck though, especially if you don't neutralize it). If you add sawdust, you get nitrocellulose. Add toluene to get TNT.

For large-ass explosions, ammonium nitrate is your best bet. The pure stuff is regulated, but given that the US is an agricultural nation, there's still millions of tons of it around. Anders Breveik registered a small agricultural corporation and bought a couple tons of the stuff. Mix it with a fuel (nitromethane, xylene, fuel oil) and add some aluminum powder for gusto. Initiate with large amounts of secondary explosive, like the stuff you made with that nitration mixture.

Alright, so that's how people make a bomb, but how do they create the detonators? Or is it a more of a light the fuse and run kind of scenario?

Primary explosives are dangerous.

Not that hard to make, but dangerous as hell.

I've heard of people simply pulling the bullet out of nugget food, putting a fireworks fuse in, and then lighting it so the powder would go off and set off of the primer.

Your best bet would probably be a small amount of HMTD on top of an output explosive like PETN, inside something like a firearms cartridge or a syringe.

Detonators are small quantities of sensitive explosives. They get made the same way the main charge was-alternative use of household chemicals in the proper proportions.

They created their explosives from several readily available household chemicals, which like machine guns were once available in every corner store for five or ten cents. Thankfully, our Federal Government quickly banned these chemicals and caused them to disappear from the face of the planet. Nothing like this can ever happen again, thanks to the ATF.
