I currently have the opportunity to buy a really nice old Luger. Anyone have any thoughts on concealed carrying one?

I want it for both protection and the shits and giggles of carrying a Luger around.

They're heavy, large, and have a small magazine capacity.

There is also the concern where if you are in a shooting, the police will likely take it as part of the investigation. You'll probably get it back, but CCing a collectible pistol is dumb IMO. Only CC something you can afford to loose.

Think your thought through to its logical conclusion. Let's say that, best case scenario, you use your Luger in justified self-defense to save your life. The police will then confiscate the gun for at least the duration of the investigation, during which time it might be mistreated or even intentionally damaged (many departments engrave the case number on the gun with dot etching). Supposedly, they're legally obligated to return your gun when they conclude their investigation, but many departments try to obstruct this process and people have had to get court orders to get their guns back sometimes, and that's often after many years of the PD leaving the investigation open, just for fun.

For a good one, probably $1500-2000. I've seen some for $400-700 but they were invariably in absolute shit condition like they've been kept in saltwater for the last 90 years

Depends on the model and condition. A typical full-sized in decent shape will be $1500-$2000 or so.

The P-1 I have (which is exactly the same as a P-38 save its aluminum, rather than steel, frame and lack of nazi stampings) is a fun gun, I love it and want to get an actual P-38 next. It's relatively inexpensive as far as WW2 handguns go and reliable as shit.

That's a myth. The service load was an 8g bullet (123.5gr) with a muzzle velocity of 1050-1090 fps. A +P 124gr load is in the 1180-1200 fps range.

I chose both.

$1050 for DWM in .30 Luger in 95% or greater condition

$900 for Erfurt made in 1917 in 9mm in as good a condition as you'd expect for being used in trench warfare.

It's a pain in the ass to get .30 luger (can only get online), so if I did it all over again, I probably would have just gone for a more expensive 9mm off the bat
