Could I retrofit one of these into a front plate carrier?

How much of the vest is kevlar, and would it be worth the extra weight for protection in SHTF?

You could. Probably wouldn't be worth it. Why just a front plate?

It actually has great coverage. But it's not made of kevlar. It has kevlar inserts. They wrap around both sides of the body and are in both the neck and shoulder guards. It covers the important bits very well.

I think a front and back plate would be heavy for regular travel, wouldn't it? Or do you need to balance? Could I do kevlar inserts everywhere but the front?

buddy, you need to not be in range of people with guns. get a medium caliber rifle and be able to hit targets from 300 yards to 500 yards. outside the range of a standard infantry guy.

Front and back is pretty standard, m8. The front sags really bad without a back one to balance it out. It's actually kind of hard to keep the whole carrier up high enough without it in.
Plus, your back is a pretty big target and you don't exactly choose where to get shot.

Yeah, you could take out the front insert, dunno why you would though.

Actually, just buy a plate carrier.

I know kevlar is for small caliber bullets and shrapnel, I'm saying that I'd like III or higher in the front and flak/pistol protection everywhere else.

They have a video of it stopping a 9mm. If you nab a relatively new german flak jacket you can expect level 2a performance.
They don't weigh a whole lot and if I were in an urban environment when shtf I would totally wear one over nothing.

The way more rare Danish variant of the vest actually has armor-plate pockets too. They cost a lot more than the old German ones too.

Just get a one size bigger plate carrier and wear it on top of the kevlar vest.

OP I have the same vest and I came up with what I think would be a decent solution. I've thought about doing the following.

1. Acquire or make a large zipper puch suitable for holding an armor plate

2. Sew buckles (those plastic ones) to the corners of the pouch

3. Sew the other half of the buckle with some extra slack to the vest in the appropriate areas

And done. Now you can just put the vest on and attach the plate rig whenever you feel like it. If you want to take the plate off just unbuckle it.

I just wear my interceptor over or under the flecktarn vest. Im wearing it right now on my way to work.

You could put in a carrier pocket with some heavy duty thread, or wear a small low profile carrier over it.
