I don't know dick about AR's but a buddy wants to sell me a Patriot Ordnance AR he wants to sell me for $1700. Here's what he said: Tack driver, gas piston, timney 3.5lb trigger.

You can buy an AR-15 for 500 dollars. You can buy 3 working AR-15's for 1500 dollars and buy 200 dollars worth of ammo.

If you don't know what an AR-15 is then your getting ripped off paying more than 800 bucks.

Don't get a piston AR.
It's unecessary weight that just chews the gun up, and you pay extra for it.
It's a pretty bad deal anyways.

If you want an AR, lurk AR threads and build your own. Getting a complete upper group makes building your own extremely easy and nearly tool-less.

Tack driver is a subjective term, piston AR's have a reputation for beating themselves up when they don't need to, 3.5 lb timney trigger is pretty cool.

I would save that $1000 and buy a midrange AR from any of the usual brands

As an AR fag, I cringe a bit at the idea of of people calling their ARs tack drivers. It's a buzz term that doesn't apply to most if not all shelf-bought ARs, being that they're mostly all not sub-MOA capable. Unless he proves that thing can consistently put 1/4" groups at 100 yards on a bench rest, I'd move on. Ain't worth the price.

>MOA is Minute of Angle. It's an accuracy term. The lower the number, the more accurate, basically.

Anything other than the bolt, barrel, optics, and maybe trigger don't have any impact on the quality for an AR.

You could literally make the rest of the firearm out of Radical Arms, Anderson Manufacturing, or PSA Blem parts, and you could have a phenomenal firearm. Put a nice barrel and a pricey trigger if you're picky (SSA-E), and spend the rest on ammo.

he's not your friend at all.
If he was selling it for $1k he might be your friend.
The only difference between that gun and a $700 AR15 build are the trigger ($200-250 on sale, and friends should be paying sale or less on ANY trades or they're strangers you're fucking over) and some shitty $200-300 piston system which will as likely damage the gun as help anything.
Even worse, if you're clueless and your friend is as much of a fucker as his pricing, it's not a brand new gun, it's been used / poorly cared for and potentially has blemishes on several areas that would reduce the price by $100-200 more when buying from a store or online.
