I appreciate the reduction of bait threads and general racism, but as you say, they're using a chainsaw where a scalpel is needed. One of the strengths of this board, and why it has a more cohesive community than any other on 4chan, in my experience, is that it provides community. You get a little bit of everything here. You get threads about /k/ film, anime, games, cars that work for the interests of people who go here, lots of topics - least of all politics.
As true it is this is a board about military equipment and arms throughout the ages, it cannot be denied that in our modern culture, it primarily focuses upon firearms. And as is well known by most gun owners, the politics of the matter, and discussion of them, are inextricably
linked to the subject and ownership therein. You can't have one without the other, and to attempt to is to inflame and anger people for attempting to do so. Kind of parallels gun control, I suppose. Only hurts the people exercising the right (In this case, the 1st Amendment), rather than the people misusing or abusing it (Trolls).
I do notice more threads like this have been allowed to survive, as of late. Maybe it was just shock and awe at first. I just know that there's a lot of people who would never have achieved a nuanced, informed viewpoint had they taken it to /pol/ rather than staying here.
