Jesus fuck, I've been wanting to talk about this, this is about the only place I'm amble to mention it without getting stoned to death, for some dumb reason.
We just had something like this in Florida. For the past couple years, our Black Bear population has been growing and growing, and it has caused problems. They were encroaching into towns in Seminole county, getting into the trash, bothering hikers, stuff like that. I even remember when one was on the roads in a semi-rural town close to where I live in the southwest of the state and people were advised to stay indoors. It got that way.
The population had grown practically unchecked, though not completely; our wildlife guys here are pretty great. The thing was, they were a protected species. Another incidence that's very relative to /k/ was because of this - the Autist Beekeeper. They started going on farmland and fucking up crops or, in his case, hives, and the people had little recourse because they couldn't exactly Castle Doctrine away a protected species.
So, after many incidents and issues, and a long period of discussion, they decided to have a hunt, for like the first time in a decade or something. Some 3,000+ people were licensed for it (Which did seem excessive, considering the number exceeded the population, but people were excited), it was announced in advance and hyped, and went off sometime within the last week. They killed 295 in two days, hunt ended. End of that.
Except for the entire week before, and for a few days after, people on my Facebook feed wouldn't shut up. It was a top trending topic. They wrote about it in local papers, Washington post, threw meme images around, the lot. Bunch of fucking city liberals from here and OUT OF FUCKING STATE, who never stepped out of the city a damned day in their lives, couldn't shut up how brutal or unscientific it was, how we should have controlled it some other way, all that shit. Made my fucking blood boil.
