If the USA were to go into total war again, would we be able to produce modern weapons as quickly as in the past? Would we be able to pump out modern carriers quickly like how we did 1944? Would we be able to produce F-35s and Abrams tanks as fast as we made Mustangs and Shermans?

How would the USA in total war even look like?

WW3 will happen with limited use of nukes but more with hyper sonic missiles. And space based missile platforms, which of course only the United States will own and operate because we simply won't allow anyone else to establish space based missiles.

Whether or not this shows my ignorance I refuse to believe wide use of nuclear weapons would be feasible. Back to the production question though I can guarantee production would be slower. By how much I don't have a fucking clue but shit has gotten expensive. I mean hell a vehicle like the Abrams was designed to be mass produced and be shit. Numbers was its advantage. Nowadays more work is put into basically all aspects of vehicles

There is no adversary on the planet that would warrant the United states to go into total war mode, a potential war with China would likely be limited in scale and very quick, in the interest of both parties.

Weapons now are incredibly more complex than they used to be. So no, they couldn't build them as quick. But there isn't an adversary on earth that could force the US into a war of attrition.

With that said, the US holds onto a massive amount of old equipment that is mothballed and made to be able to return to service relatively quickly. Even the F-117s are sitting in climate controlled hangars.

The biggest problem is actually getting the equipment out there. The air force can lift a large amount of personnel around the world but they wouldn't have any of their equipment.

Our strategy comes down to protecting Sealift command's ships from submarines, bombers and mines, the former two were huge issues during any potential wars we would've had with the Soviets. Soviet attack boats would've sprinted through sosus before enough of our subs can catch and destroy them, and their bombers can come over the north pole and launch their long range anti shipping missiles at convoys.

Losing even a single cargo ship that carried equipment could have enormous impact on the front which would've been depleting in men and equipment at a horrendous rate.

With what factories op? Everything in the us is outsourced to China. Assuming were not full scale vs China we can make highly expensive equipment and that's it. Some small scale shops will have to supply the entire nation with tools, clothes, and household goods. The us could keep the army afloat on the war industry, but the civilian cost wow be entirely too large, and every time the civs get butt blasted the us pulls out.
