Best muffs? Double up or no?

Looking to get a pair, found some muffs on Amazon with 34db NRR but they don't have a mic or anything on the outside to let you hear sounds aside from the gunshots well.

What do you all recommend?

I like wearing howard leight 32db plugs with muffs over them. There's probably other brands that are ok too, but some 32db plugs are uncomfortably tight after a little while.
Otherwise, those same plugs worn loosely under some electronic earpro with volume at max. A loose set of plugs really cleans up the sound and keeps it from blaring in your ear.

NRR is all I care about. Doubling up doesn't work as great as you think, but it helps as well.

There's a few electronic plugs on the market, but they're expensive. I personally use the Peltor TEP-100 since they're rechargeable by three AA batteries. There's also the Etymotic GSP-15 and the SportEAR Ghost Stryke. Both of them use zinc-air hearing aid batteries.

now, if you want to talk electric and being able to hear things aside from loud noises, thats a different issue.

I have these exact earmuffs and they are not appreciably more effective than any other cheap pair of earmuffs I have bought in the $20-35 price range. They work perfectly outside, but are a little weak for my preference in indoor ranges shooting big bore handguns or any rifles.

I have found the exact opposite. Doubling up is the only way I can get the ear protection adequately strong enough for me.

They don't seal well for me either, but I still love them.
I just wear plugs under and crank up the volume. My main reason for getting them was just to hold conversations with other people, which is why I bought 3 when they were 30 bucks each. They do that for me.

34db NRR will work for most things to get gunshots down to a level that is not damaging but if you are shooting indoors or in a group doubling up is literally the only way to not get long term hearing damage from the noise.

but wait, there's more...

85db+ is the threshold for hearing damage. fuck what some people say, that is the science.

To get down below that you need to double up and use a suppressor. the downside of plugs is damage to the hairs in your ears and therefore your hearing so repeatedly using plugs in and of themselves damages hearing even without any loud noises.

the fact remains that there is no good solution outside of a good suppressor and shooting outdoors while also using the best earmuffs and some earplugs if you want no hearing damage.

Since the government has outlawed safety you must pay over a thousand dollars if you want to not have long term hearing damage when shooting via a suppressor.

Do any of you waterfowl or upland hunters wear hearing protection? I used to wear those simple orange plugs but found it annoying as if I couldn't really get a sense of my surroundings, took them off and found that 6 shot for pheasant wasn't that loud after all, 3 shot for duck however does hit my left ear just a bit.

I should also mention my AR has a Seekins Precision ATC on it and it's loud as hell. Those Howard Leights are enough even with the comp.

No but they get hot and make my head sweat after a while. I have a pretty low 4.5-14 x 40 Mueller APV on my 10/22T and they don't impede shooting that.

Depends on you, I tend to sweat pretty easily but I'm in Georgia too and our summers aren't exactly friendly. I can wear them for a couple of hours before I have to let my head breathe.
