>>27742490>because of the race to Berlin between him and another Marshal. It essentially boiled down to Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front and Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front in the race to Berlin. Rokossovsky could have potentially been a contender in the "race" as well if he had not been reassigned to rendezvous with Montgomery.
In regards to Montgomery's autism, it is indeed the assertion of noted historian Antony Beevor, as well as relations of Montgomery himself that the man suffered from such an affliction. The accounts of Omar Bradley in liaison matters further corroborate this. However, we may never know for sure.
Rommel was no doubt one of the most charismatic commanders of the war, but it must be said that he failed to delegate properly (a carryover from his days as a field officer in the First World War) and often rushed headlong into very reckless actions (which often paid off, to his credit). Like Guderian, Rommel is an example of exceptional conduct in his local theatre, but as far as General Staff related strategising and work goes, there probably were far more suitable individuals, in particular Erich von Manstein.
Just my two cents, found this thread highly interesting.
