Do remember that the niceness of the trigger, how comfortable it is in the hands, and so on don't really matter for a self defense gun. You'll be mashing the shit out of the trigger with all that adrenaline and won't give two fucks about the feel of it. The only thing feel is important for is making sure you don't bitch out about going to the range.
So go to a gun store and try both the 19 and 17. Don't let them talk you into .40 or .45, the FBI's evidence shows 9mm is just as good, cheaper, and more ammo in the same size of gun. Also if they're charging much more than $550 for a Glock you can get them online for much cheaper through an FFL.
