Trenches would enter stalemates, charges would often end with dudes getting cut down in no man's land. So they thought, hey, suppress the enemy, as you move forward on them. This also resulted in them getting cut down, so it was dropped.
Luckily, we did learn it tended to fuck up their accuracy and efficiency, and more modern tactics like bounding overwatch were realized.
>>27742093Actually it wasn't entirely one handed, while it WAS heavy, the buttstock fit into a cup that was part of the users ammunition belt. So it was supported at the hip from the rear, you could keep it raised from the forward part of the stock, and reload with your free hand.
>>27742103It really didn't see much use, it was limited in that time so not surprising you know it from WW2. The US weren't in the war long to begin with so that plus the limited role and it didn't stand out much.
