What are the United State's primary defenses as far as aircraft go? Obviously not pic related, but what kind of aircraft are the typical first responders to threats?

F-22 is there as the devil in the shadows to make the enemy unsure at what point any given squadron near US airspace could be totally BTFO

Serious threats
F-15 is still better than 90% of any possible enemy aircraft

Why didn't the North East have any fighters with weapons ready to scramble on 9/11?
US felt so secure that they didn't see any point in having interceptor capability there?

I wasn't saying the F-16 was mediocre, i said its used for mediocre threats

You do not send your assets willingly into a fair fight. you make sure that what you are sending is substantially better than what its going against.

The answer is you don't send combat assets willingly into anything approaching an equal fight, there are numerous aircraft that are a threat on a similiar level to the F-15 these days, at no point did i say they would outperform the F-15, merely that some are not outperformed heavily by the F-15

And that's exactly what i mean, Tu-95 has no risk of damaging or destroying whatever is sent, and would be what i'm meaning as Mediocre

I'm sure primary defenses would be F16/18s. However, if we're talking air to ground (like if Putin went off the wall and decided to try and land a bunch of ruski tanks and APCs on free soil) I'm pretty sure Apaches would be handling it, considering they are owned and operated by almost every branch of the military.

We did, my dad was an F18 pilot and Andrews AFB and on 9/11 his entire unit was rotating in and out of the air to make sure that passenger planes were following instructions to land immediately

They actually didn't for taking down Flight 93 - they had to scramble unarmed F-16 to ram it, but luckily the passengers took it down themselves.
