Semi related does anyone make a good quality monolithic upper with keymod and a 10-14in handguard that isnt gonna break the bank? I'd prefer to stay well under $500

im going with midwest industries because its hard to beat their price.

this is the specific one im looking to get because of the monolithic top rail. they make the same thing in keymod thought so its worth checking out. i just wasnt sure if mlok was shit or not because its relatively new.

You're over thinking this. Both keymod and m-lok generally need rail segments to add anything at all. Rail segments are vastly available. Buy the one you think looks better.

I have a quad on my v5 but if I was going to switch the MI Gen 3 M-lok would be my first choice.

I think mlok will probably be better supported than keymod eventually, but if I had a keymod forend I wouldnt be rushing to change. I do kinda like the look of these new mlok qd mounts, wonder how theyd hold up over years..

Seriously though, I do think MLok is going to pull ahead eventually. It's just so much simpler to manufacture or redress/repair, and more robust to boot.

The MI rails are all fully dehorned and feel fine in the hand too. They're also easier to install, since you don't have to time the barrel nut. The ALG handguard with the full top rail is only slightly less expensive than the corresponding length of MI handguard.

The glue is optional. The torque plate on the gen 3 handguards hooks onto the back of the barrel nut, so even if you don't glue it the handguard isn't going anywhere.

I have a BCM KMR but it would appear that MLOK just blew out KMR .

Military arms channel just posted a video of this new MLOk piece that clips on and off without tools. Unless Keymod can counter that they're done

I have a MI 2 piece Keymod rail on my AR. After thousands of rounds and a couple carbine courses its worked just fine. Nothing falling off, no issues whatsoever. The reasons I went with a keymod rail are mlok wasn't around and the rail was thinner than a full rail hand guard. It fit my hand a lot better than some bulky quad rail hand guard.

I'm not in the military or le so all I have on my rifle's hand guard is a flashlight and some rail covers.

OK, for a range gun, I wouldn't trust one for a serious use gun. Personally I would spend a little more and get a Geissele rail, they have a far more robust barrel nut to rail interface.

Price is one area. The 13" is like $115. It's like +$20 though for their front sight rail. (Necessary if you want a front sight.) I'm honestly thinking of building an 18" midlength upper with the ALG 13" rail, Vortex PST 2.5-10x32mm, and no iron sights.

I've not settled on a specific barrel or upper yet, so rifle vs midlength vs intermediate will be settled based on availability when I get around to actually buying one.

As for why I'm thinking of midlength... PSA has a $500 kit that'd be pretty decent to start with.

I'm not too worried. It can't be heavier than my 308. While I would prefer a medium contour barrel (.750") but it's not meant to the be my lightest AR. It'll be my third or fourth AR.
