We just had an analysis of short barrel efficacy in another thread.

Basically, with regards to standard m193 ammo, a 10.5" barrel provides for velocity greater than the frangible minimum of around 2700fps and the bullet doesn't not drop below that for that distances within what most would consider CQC. Furthermore, pushed out to about 200', the 5.56 out of a 10.5" barrel still carries about double the energy than you would get using .45acp, albeit in a lighter round.

I lost the argument against the 10.5" barrel AR for combat with distances at less than 100 yards. Their great.
Anything shorter than that is still too short.

How short can the 300 Blackout go and still be reliable?

Also, I have an 8" upper waiting for a suppressor and SBR stamp. Are uppers you build yourself generally finecky at first and is there any simple precautions to take before taking it to the range beyond lubing it up and stuff?

ARs have bolts already on the lighter side for blowback 9mm, so shortening the barrel thus reducing the blowback power shouldn't be a problem for cycling unless you go crazy like 2".

iirc if the barrel is less than 16" its an sbr unless you put it on a pistol lower, which is a lower that has never been used as a rifle. so dont have a short barreled upper and a rifle lower laying around because the BATFE can rape you for constructive intent

use quality parts and you shouldn't have this problem. I used a PSA 8.5" 300BLK barrel and a micro gas block and piston length gas tube and mine runs like a top. During my early loads I found that light charges of H110 in subsonic loads wouldn't cycle the bolt. Heavier charges cycle the bolt but wouldn't lock the bolt to the rear on the last round. 11.3gr of AA1680 and Hornady A-Max 208gr will cycle and lock to the rear with and without the suppressor attached. 18gr of H110 and Hornady V-Max 110gr have been great supersonic loads for me. I don't load at the red line because I want to keep a margin of safety in my loads and not beat the shit out of my NFA gun. For hunting and home defense I use Barnes TAC-TX or VOR-TX, whatever the factory loaded shit is, solid copper bullets that are like $2/round with shipping factored in. Very spendy caliber, 300 is.

General legal question.

Can I own an AR upper that would fall under SBR if actually put on a gun without the SBR stamp? If so, at what point does it become an SBR? Like, let's say I have my fully assembled regular AR and right next to it I have my short upper, is that cool? Is it all the way until it is actually put onto a lower that it becomes an SBR?

Sorry, I'm kinda new to all the little legal gotchas.

Yes. For uppers, law/marketing is where the pistol/sbr distinction comes from.
Physically they're just short ar15 uppers.

Though in such a large market, I'm sure there are several oddball exceptions.

I mean the same concern you would have about anything, which would be each ring/ring base being made to the exact same spec as its matching one. If you spend $100 for a pair you generally get out of the cheap Chinese import shit that has any cause for that concern. You are also limited to the space on your upper receiver. I've seen folks mount one ring on their forward rail and one on the receiver, but I wouldn't fuck with that myself. Look at a Burris PEPR, had one on an old accupoint and it did fine. Really look at ADM if you want to grab something that should keep you pretty well happy through the various stages and quality of glass you put on that gun. If you buy a PEPR now, if you ever get $1000 worth of optics on top I bet you would be looking at replacing it.
