Though it's not healthy to depend entirely on other people's reactions as to feel loved and 'worthy' as a human being, it is impossible not to do so at least to a small degree. Deep down, most of us are motivated by a desire to be acknowledged and accepted - to receive affection from other human beings.
People can go to impressive or simply tragic lengths to try and achieve that, including shaming and putting others down as to 'fit in' with their group. They might even resort to violence if that's what's expected of them.
