There's even a canon story in Grimoire Nier of her stroking her dick in some bushes and getting caught by a cleric. Her status as a dickgirl is simply to make an obvious comparison to real trans people and the ostracism they face from society. That's hardly subtle and comes off hamfisted when she's literally the only trans person in the entire game.
Emil, on the other hand, is subtley gay. That's simply who he is. It's not even a plot point nor gets it's own story in a sidebook. He's as much a person as Kaine, Nier, Devola, or Popola. His sexuality doesn't define him and there's no preachy comparisons to be made like with Kaine. That's what makes his /lgbt/ status all the more better.
Although with that said Kaine is still good. Really good. Although that's for other reasons like her not giving a damn about anything, swearing like a sailor, and having a death wish for being who she is until she gets her revenge on her grandma killer and slowly learns the joys of life. It's just that Emil was the only thing about /lgbt/ that was handled 'well' in the game.
