Gender dysphoria is a mental illness according to the DSM. If you had an option to take a new med that would cure you, would you do it to avoid the grueling process of a physical/hormonal change? Legit question, legit curious.

Do note that you're not only misunderstanding what the DSM is, you're also citing an older version of the DSM. Do also note that the papers that led to the reclassification in the DSM-V were explicitly because you and your ilk are wrong.

Well the dysphoria is basically the pain that comes from the mismatch between the body and the mind. "Curing" it would have to either nullify that pain or bring the body/mind into alignment. With our current tech, bringing the body into alignment is much much easier and actually feasible. It will continue to be this way and improve incrementally until we have a revolution in neuroscience and medical ethics.(changing what is believed to be a fundamental part of someone's identity carries a ton of ethical implications that stem far beyond trans issues)

Also, to clarify, being transgender isn't a mental illness the dysphoria is. It's basically gender depression at this point. The defining criteria of mental disorders has been changed to focus primarily on quality of life and ability to function in order to avoid biased pathologization of culturally inappropriate behavior. This is part of why gays are no longer considered mentally ill. So, if someone identifies as the opposite sex but doesn't experience the debilitating symptoms associated with gender dysphoria, you can't really classify them as mentally ill.

So you're saying if they cured the dyshoria, but left the identity intact, thousands of legit trans people would be rendered AGP transtrenders? This board says a lot of stupid shit and I'd take everything said with a grain of salt.

The purpose of transition as a treatment is to nullify the debilitating symptoms of dysphoria to the point where the patient can have a decent quality of life and function relatively normally in society. This has worked for numerous patients and it doesn't make them any less "trutrans".

Sadly success from transition depends upon way to many factors for it to be a truly effective treatment. The reason why we're still using this outdated treated from the 50's is because trans people and their issues aren't important to most of society, nobody is really looking into a better alternative. It's works for about 50% of trans people or more so why fuck with it now is the general attitude.

If anything we just need better transition methods since that's much more realistically viable than a sci-fi nanomachine pill or whatever that restructures the brain so much. On a side note we'd probably find a cure for being gay first since we've observed similar but less extensive neurological differences and we'd probably be able to change peoples brains in a bunch of other ways too if we had that level of neurological manipulation technology.

Saying it's an outdated treatment from the 50s really isn't accurate, it's drastically improved since then, and there's even studies saying that the elevated suicide risk for transitioned people post-1989 is not statistically significant.
