What do you think about trans women using female bathrooms? I don't care if you want to pretend to be a girl on your own time or parade around downtown in a dress, but I think it's appalling to have penis-laden transgender people demanding to use women's bathrooms.

This isn't about equality - this about common sense.

I want to get your thoughts on this, /lgbt/

I honestly dont see why we really need gendered bathrooms in this day and age. If anything if we just made separate bathrooms for like families that need to change their babies. If anything, I think if we just changed them to "stand up bathrooms" and "sit down bathrooms" that would solve everything.

We could even just call them pissers and shitters for laughs

Modern genetics says whether someone is genetically male or female comes down to gene expression so it's pretty much dependent on hormones.

That means an MTF who's medically transitioned would phenotypically be one and a woman in menopause wouldn't.

None of the "scientific facts" you bring up are really relevant. The fact that sex differences exist in biology has nothing to do with whether trans people should be allowed to use the bathrooms of their identified sex. That's like saying homosexuality is wrong because magnetism says opposites attract. And gendered bathrooms are far more of a social construct than gender identity is.

I don't see how exactly biology would be that relevant here. especially since you're clearly referring to a simplistic version of biology that only includes anatomy and ignores things like the biological basis of gender identity. It's about whether or not letting trans people use the bathroom is harmful or not.

Just because you're suppressing your genetics doesn't mean they do not exist.
I understand how hormones work.
I understand you can be extremely effeminate and androgynous as a male, or masculine as a female.
Those are subtypes though.
It does not change the fact you are still an effeminate male or masculine female.

Now that we have genetic augmentation beginning to develop to a more sophisticated level.
Yes in the near future you will be able to literally change your entire genetic structure and possibly adapt your body into truly being a females.

This is implying already living adults could survive the change though.
As any alteration of a genetic line of code could cause full body shutdown, cancerous growths, etc.

The change would need to happen at a very young age when hormones are still adapting.

However as of this point in time it's impossible to make a 100% transition.

Some cisgender women are born with XY chromosomes, but that doesn't mean they have to us the male bathroom. And regardless of what sex we "really" are, the idea of gendered bathrooms is a social construct itself, if it's found that letting trans people using the bathroom of the gender they identify doesn't harm anyone there's no real reason to ban them from doing so.

if you ftm but not so masculine (say no beard, short stature), women won't care about you in their rooms because they'll assume you're just a lesbian.

FTMs really do have it easier than MTFs when it comes to passing. There's just a lot less pressure/threat/discomfort because you walk the androgynous line.

MTF women seem to be locked into a must-pass, must-be-validated-as-woman situation, where FTM men can slide around the spectrum without much external pressure.

I wish there was more of a FTM presence on this board who could speak to the challenges of their situation. I know next to nothing about their experiences, but I know A LOT about MTF Women's troubles and tribulations.

My point is that a lot of FTM transexuals can conformably pass in a men's bathroom because there are plenty of androgynous guys out there. Men just won't notice if a short, slightly effeminate-looking guy walks in and uses a stall.

Naturally, an FTM transsexual with gains and facial hair will pass with flying colors in a men's room.

Then on the other side of the spectrum, an FTM transsexual of the former type (androgynous, short, effeminate looking guy) could use a women's bathroom and easily pass as a lesbian.

It's just easier for FTMs to pick the bathroom that suits their appearance.

MTFs have to deal with a lot more trouble. If you are insecure about passing, you must worry about men being threatened, appalled if you enter a men's room. You have to worry about women being threatened/appalled if you use their bathroom.

Am I making any sense? I'm just speculating that trans issues are often more pronounced and dire for MTFs because they aren't as readily accepted as a FTM.

Yes, I'm talking out of my ass, but this is based on reading the lived experiences of a lot of transsexuals from both sides of the issue.

If anybody has links to communities for FTM Trans Men I'd be grateful - I am honestly curious about the challenges they face.

I was at a mixer recently with a lot of different types - men, women, transmen, transwomen, gay men in drag, homosexuals, heterosexuals.

The issue came up over whether a certain drag performer should be using the women's bathroom. He was making women uncomfortable, but from his perspective, he was 'being a woman for tonight, so wanted the full experience, including the women's bathroom to blow lines of K with his drag buddy.'

I think the women at the party were justified to be troubled by the presence of men in drag in their bathroom.

How then can a woman differentiate a transexual from a guy in drag in these situations?

It's a sticky subject for sure. I mean, at this particular party, the drag queens would have no problem in the mens' room. But like, I think it's a valid complaint from ciswomen to be bothered by assigned-males in their bathroom.

In that sort of situation it's probably reasonable to assume that the men wouldn't be too put off by someone presenting as female, but really I think that would apply to women too if they at least have separate stalls. However, in everyday situations there's a concern that men won't appreciate a mtf in their bathroom any more than women would, and mtfs have been beaten up for going in the men's room while presenting as female. And certainly if they pass there's little reason to expect them to use the male bathroom.

You're right, in this particular situation, there would be no problem for somebody presenting-as-female to use the men's room (anybody could have used that men's room lol, it was pretty wild), or for that matter, somebody passing in earnest could have used the women's room. The boys in drag were making a scene blowing lines on the hand dryer, which is the root of the trouble.

There was a lot of drama as a result. It even bubbled up on the event page on facebook after the party. Lots of panties in a twist over the drag queens' blustering confidence to take over the women's room.

But this is all besides the point, as you say. For everyday use, mtf transexuals are in a difficult situation where neither bathroom is safe.

It's a tough quandry. If society were more decent, we could just have unisex bathrooms everywhere, but ... well... society aint decent about these things.

I remember when I was ~13 these men were harassing me, they followed me when I tried to get away from them and the only place they couldn't follow me to was the women's bathroom. I hid out there until they got bored and left. No one should be the victim of violence just for using the bathroom, but sex segregated bathrooms are a way of *avoiding* violence too.

There is value in not making all bathrooms gender neutral.

You have to get used to it sooner or later. If you pass, there's not really a reason to go into the mens room anymore.
As long as I don't slip on all the feces, I don't know why I should care about how sanitary the place is. When I sit my weight is on the fabric of my pants, the only thing I touch are the door handles and unused toilet paper. And then I wash my hands. Why worry?

There's really no reason a male couldn't be harassed in the same way, and the bathroom wouldn't protect them. And, there's no magical force preventing men from entering the woman's bathroom if they're intent on harassing you. I think the best solution is to set up stalls so they can only have one occupant at a time (i.e. by having a lock that can only be opened from the inside), and set up security cameras watching the area outside the stalls.

Gay male, any pre op transexual should be using the bathroom of there current physical gender not there chosen gender. If you are post op obviously you would use the appropriate bathroom for your current gender. This is why I think gender neutral bathrooms would be a good idea, not everyone is comfortable with sharing a restroom with someone with different genitals. While I can understand trans people feeling this is unfair to them they seem to forget that what they want may be unfair to someone else.

Is there a logical reason why MtFs should absolutely have SRS in order to use the women's restroom, but not FtMs for the men's room? The srs options for ftms aren't as good but it's more just that no one really cares about/ remembers ftms are a thing and they just like to demonize mtfs as perverted men while they just disregard ftms as poor confused victims of internalized sexism.
