I'm not sure if we know exactly what causes it but most people seem to think its an auto immune disease in which the body sees its pancreas as a foreign object and tries to kill it. Afterwards you can't produce insulin and need to inject it. Nothing I did or could have not done could have stopped or caused it.
The hormones can raise blood sugar though, from what my endo told me.
