They do. I can go down to the courthouse to get married without involving religion whatsoever. It is, in theory, secular.

But theory isn't practice, and tons of people view it as a religious institution

That is the only logical argument needed. Two consenting adults should be able to get married, regardless of who they are. There is no logical reason not to allow that.

So yeah, I don't get all the anti-religious arguments involving pro gay marriage propaganda.

At least when I was a part of the church I remember that was a main way to serve god. Pray, go to church, marry a virgin, then make babies that will also go to church and pray.

And I thought "man what if I don't want babies" and it was all "no, as a woman that's the main way you serve god by making life/babies".

If you aren't making babies you're some demon. That's also why they're anti abortion. Fuckers just want a world full of babies. Gays a slight because of the no baby thing.

It is separated. That's why it's so painfully obvious that marriage should not be withheld from gay couples. It works like this:

1. The state can grant marriage status legally, with all that entails. This is what gay people in the states recently became eligible for.

2. Churches can perform marriage ceremonies that have meaning in their community and presumably make their zombie-god happy. Gay people cannot force the churches to do this for them, even though some would like their religious community to acknowledge their unions.

You can get 1 without 2, and 2 without 1 (although that's more rare for obvious reasons).

I agree with you. Ideally, murika would have civil unions instead of marriage, and leave it to the person's to see how their bond is. If they view getting their civil union as religious marriage, then they have the right to celebrate as such, in a church that chooses to perform it.

It's just not how we work. Until we get rid of marriage as a legal institution, we don't have any other option. You've got to work in the confines of your system. Us fans couldn't have our relationships recognized without calling it marriage, so we had to get the right to be married.

In Germany, marriage is 100% secular, and the state does not want to grant it for gay people, primarily because of social arguments. (kids need a mother and a father to grow up, gay people do not have the need for judicial marriage etc.)

Religious arguments rarely come up. Only when it is requested that the church make it possible for gay people to get married. Which they obviously, and understandably do not want to do.
