Hey /lit/, I was just reading some of Dreamseller, a memoir about being a drug addict, and realised how much I like reading about people with fucked up lives, like this and The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx.

Anyone got any recommendations? I'm not necessarily after ones about drugs, just any good biographies about people in messed up situations.

Bukowski is the big one.
Especially his earlier novels.

For just straight up drug stuff, Junkie by William S Burroughs is a great book. I guess he gets in a few nasty situations being addicted to heroin, but the stakes are kind of lowered since he's educated and well off.

Jack Black's (not THAT Jack Black) book You Can't Win is a really cool book about a guy who becomes a cat burglar in, I think, the early twentieth century. It's an autobiography published under a fake name. It influenced Burroughs a lot.

A Child Called It, which I haven't read all of, is an autobiography about this guy who was the victim of like the second worse case of child abuse ever. His mom made him eat dirty diapers and lay on the stove and beat the shit out of him all the time. Really brutal stuff.

And then there's also Scar Tissue, Anthony Kiedis's autobiography, which is, I imagine, similar to Nikki Sixx's.

not a bad writer by any means but I personally find him mediocre even compared to his contemporaries.

definitely not in my top ten or even top 30.

The Great Gatsby is my least favorite thing that he has written and I hated him until I read this side of paradise and the beautiful and the damned.

The point is that marriage and raising children is a great strain on a man's time and resources, which may hinder his ability to produce art.

I don't think he's right, though. Much good can come out of marriage and children. And even if it can't, it is still better to enjoy family in obscurity than to earn fame and respect only for art, and never to know the joys and pains of wife and child.

I liked the Wardine section, I think people mistakenly take it for a failed attempt at real ebonics when it was actually a very aesthetic attempt at fictional ebonics; IJ takes place in a slightly distorted world.

DFW was a meme and an addict and a really weird guy but he was definitely very very smart- if he wanted to imitate the way black people talk he could have done a better job than that. He was having fun with language, it's kind of the entire point of interesting writers.
