So why even is this book considered so great? I don't get it.

Can we stop the "start with the greeks" meme? This is a much better starting point for literature.

When a book introduces a character how do you go about forming their design? I start out picturing them as described in the book but over time they change until I have a clear picture in my head of who the character is, which is sometimes very different than initially described. In my weeaboo days I pictured everyone as an anime character

I introduce their particularities very gradually, because in my works, appearance is not really important and the gender you (usually) figure it my the name and behaviour. That being said, don't go full info dump every time someone new appears. What I do is write casual details like "ran his hand through his blonde cascade" or shut like that. Depends on the context of course, but I never go "X entered the room. He was tall, with blonde hair that blah blah blah"

I started reading books "seriously" about 2 months ago, so far i readed some entry level books like, Norwegian Wood, Catcher in the rye, brave new world, the stranger... And now im really interested in reading infinite jest after reading some coments on it and watching a few dfw interviews, but im scared that the book will be too much for me because im a total pleb. ¿Should i buy it /lit/? Im quite open minded to art and i really like avant garde films and music, so i dont mind if i dont understand the book at first but im afraid of buying it and then abandon it after the few hundreds of pages :( Thank you in advance

>>7302556 I think a good idea would be to read some of David Foster Wallace's shorter works beforehand, so you get the gist of whether you like his style or not.
Good Old Neon is one of his short stories from Oblivion. It's available freely here:
http://kalamazoo.coop/sites/default/files/Good%20Old%20Neon.pdf It's pretty good. Apart from that, some of his non-fiction is excellent as well. I'd specifically recommend A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Probably Never Do Again.

>>7302570 Wow, really? If you're worried about spending money on books then get a library card and deal with what they have there or stop reading. Or shut the fuck up and buy books.

Flaubert's Salammbo is the best book about Carthage. Truly one of the great works of world literature, ignored in the Anglosphere. For actual history, Livy books 21-30 may be the best source.

Hey there /lit/, I need an information regarding a novel by Bret Easton. As I'm aware about the fact that the novel American Psycho was first published by Vintage New York in the year 1991 in paperback format (the book wasn't published in hardcover in the United States until 2012). So, the thing I want to know is the time when Vintage Books New York first published this book did it had (pic realated) cover?
