There's a really nice book shop near me that sells used books that are in really good condition, so you can barely tell the difference.

I buy three books a week on average and read slightly more than that.
I spend about $350 a month on books, primarily because I buy a lot of out-of-print books.
Used if the author is dead or the book is easily available, new if the author is a new author/one I support who is alive/book is hard to find or very specific.
I read a lot of e-books via Kindle Unlimited.

I work in a corporate bookstore so anything new enough that I can't get it at the huge public library in my city I can check out from the store. I'm spoiled that way.

I also get promos, advanced readers, and pre-release stuff.

So despite reading an awful lot I only spend about 10-20 bucks a month on books tops.

There are some people who will literally come in, buy a book, and come in the next day or the day after for a recommendation or a similar title they've heard about. Some people have literally no other hobbies that I guess.

$50+, can be much steeper depending on what I buy, but the more expensive books tend to be the longer and more difficult ones, so they in turn "last longer"

Both, but mostly new. Used only if new copies cost way more (anthologies are often guilty of this), or if I find something while browsing a used book store and it's not something that demands a specific edition/translation.

Majority of my reading is pirated ebooks. Every once in a while, if I have nothing going on, I browse around in goodwill and a few other thrift stores. If I find a book that I've read sometime in the last 10 years, or a nicer copy of one I have already, I buy it.

I also occasionally buy new books by authors I know.

I don't really know, it depends on what is available. I buy something like 15~40 books a month, but it also includes books I may already own, reference books—I'm deeply interested in languages so I buy a lot of different dictionaries, grammars and so on—and books with less than 100 pages. I spend 220~270$ a month. I never or very rarely buy new books, I prefer to go to secondhand bookstores. I hate ebooks, too.

42.5k a year. I have a low position as a tax consultant in a big company but I don't spend that much and have few hobbies. I don't own a car and I don't have any loan at this time. I also rarely go on vacation, this leaves enough money to save up and buy books without being too worried.

there's this relatively large bookstore by my house that charges unreasonably high prices because it's in a wealthy neighborhood and like it totally caters to the rich white yuppie demographic, so they dont really think about shoplifters anyway. that and barnes and noble sometimes if they have what i want, in which case i just sit down at the cafe, read the book for like 20 minutes, and then put it in my bag and walk out

the other one is just next to some fancy restaurant

for what it's worth i live in a southwest state in the U.S. so the difficulty and level of surveillance might be different elsewhere

Otherwise I usually buy a book a month, 20-60$ range, always new unless there aren't any other copies or if one copy just looks better.

Torrent eBooks by the terabyte, and purchase the ones I approve of. Last one I bought was Hugh Howey's Wool, good sci-fi romp.

Never worked retail before? Trust me, 95% of customers you just completely forget if they're anywhere close to normal size. Just check discreetly at the cashiers to see if they use any sort of magnetic detection method or the like.

Always walk, never rush. Practice the walk if you feel nervous, it's very different once you're actually holding the item you're planning to steal.

Nope. I collect the paper novels. I usually drop them on people I'm absolutely sure would enjoy them if they weren't so terrified of reading. They stack up on other people's shelves and nobody reads them and talks to me about them. Sigh.

I'll do an amazon order of mostly new books and then just regularly check on the stock at the local used bookstores .

I have a paperwhite and I've read fiction and essays in it and enjoyed it but haven't done so in a while. No reason in particular though.

I go to this store that sells books for 25 cents a piece. It's not really a store but some reclusive old guy who just has a shit ton of books and needs to pay rent so he has turned half his home into a book store.

I go in every week and spend about two hours talking with him about the books I bought from him and the books he is reading ect....

Then I grab about 10 dollars worth of books.... 40 books a week and load them into my baskets on my bike and ride home.

There I organize the books; he has almost every single fucking classic you can think of and he also has a huge collection philosophy books and those awesome glossy books about artist like davinci and a bunch of obscure painters.

Anyway I've been doing this for the past year every week going out and buying 40 books.

Of course I'm never going to read all the books I read maybe 2 books a week so I have a long way to go... But I just enjoy the collection.

Plus I could probably make some good money flipping these on ebay or amazon if I really wanted to take the time to do that.
