Finance, at my university, is seen as kinda dirty (people do it anyway though) while consulting was sorta morally neutral and tech people all had a messiah complex. Consulting' intense interviews and interest in your test scores also have it the halo of seeming more meritocratic than finance, and the wide experiences you can acquire while working as a management consultant gave the people who were in denial about doing whatever brought the money in a way to claim they were totally gonna save the world later.
What the top students go for changes constantly. Back in the early 70s, everyone wanted to work in the pentagon, believe it or not.
