Haven't read that, but I read War and Peace which is about the same length. A great artist can make incredibly long works fly by if they know what they're doing.

Not bad, could've been a lot worse. I have more of a problem with the way they drew conflict out of a conflictless transcript and rearranged material to make it more of a story. For example, the whole heroin question, in the movie, is Lipsky's quest, and it provides an emotional climax when Wallace starts flipping out in his living room about being asked about it. In real life, they were in a diner or something and Lipsky goes "Heroin?" and Wallace goes "This again?" and Lipsky says "Gotta ask" and Wallace says no. That's it. And they turned that into something completely different. But in addition to squeezing drama out of casual conversation, they invent it out of thin air with the subplot where the two girls show up and Lipsky flirts with one of them and Wallace gets mad. The truth is, in real life it was just an interviewer and Wallace hanging out for a few days and it got slightly awkward a few times. Not a movie.

Yea when lipsky is talking to his boss and he tells him to ask about heroin i thought "Oh god this isn't going to be the climax of the movie, is it?" That and the girls felt very forced. Then again, all I have for reference is interviews I've seen of him and Girl With Curious Hair. Borrowed IJ from a friend and I'm starting it tomorrow

Not trying to assert its difficulty, but the first ten pages are a poor indication, if only because the novel becomes confusing as a whole.

It is nonlinear, you don't receive a timeline until~300 pages in, there are a lot of characters who are actually important to the plot, and it tries the readers patience due to seeming to be several disparate stories for the first quarter of the book.

Perhaps you won't find it difficult, but the real difficulty of the novel is in these things far more than the prose itself.

I bought it and around 100 pages in I couldn't handle having to flip to the end 10 times each chapter to read an essay.

I got brothers karamsov next, and even though its long too its way more enjoyable since I can continuously read without losing my train of thought.
