Knowing his translation preferences, I expect it's very faithful to the original but really tries to capture the subtleties and (possible) implications of particular word use, based on etymology. I remember him talking about the reference to "l'aereo perso" in Inferno Canto V: it literally means "the lost air", but "perso" is also the colour of ink. That said, his version of the opening lines seems to stray quite far from the original.
