What's some scifi that is:

1) Epic in scale
2) Some type of message/philosophy beyond a hero's tale
3) Isn't written horribly. (I know Herbert isn't known for his prose but it's not distractingly bad.

I really like Hyperion too. Book of the New Sun was alright but I found it disjointed and not fun to read.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is getting an official translation soon, maybe you'll like that. It's War & Peace in space with animu Mary Sue protagonists.

Dhalgren is great but I wouldn't recommend it to some one who found Book of the New Sun disjointed. Check out The Bohr Maker trilogy, its disorientingly epic.

I really enjoyed Revelation Space, Chasm City, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap. It's been quite a while, but I think I do recall the ending of some of the books didn't reach the heights of the rest of the book. I find that's the case in most books, however. Unless an ending has a huge cliff-hanger.

I watched LotGH recently and really liked it. I meant by message, anything really beyond an adventure tale. Like with Dune there's critiques on religion and environmentalism.

I just finished this yesterday, but I thought it was pretty mediocre. I enjoyed the origins and ending of mike, the polygamous marriages were interesting, and the scenes with actual armed resistance gave me a half-chub, but the rest let me down. The writing felt like a bunch of cliched texan cowboys in space, with a spattering of russian and foreign names to make it sound cosmopolitan. The dialog felt completely contrived, with the prof acting as a self insert for Heinlein most of the time.

I liked the book, but I agree with the point about dialogue. A lot of great sci-fi writers aren't masters of prose and character development, unfortunately. But seriously, say "tovarishch" one more time you fuck
