That said, your comment makes me think. I suspect one of the reasons the road was so successful was because it WAS genre fiction attached to a real, skilled literary figure. We see it as McCarthy's lesser works, besides BM, child of god, suttree, but plenty of plebs read it because it was post apocalyptic, not to mention Oprah's hordes who have been fed nothing but progressive narratives on gender and race for 10 years.
Basically the Road gets acclaim because it was the valedictorian of summer school
