What are some good, well established essays on how to look at visual art?
I'm looking for some entry level material into interpretation/composition...just stuff that will make visits to the museum or movie theater more engaging.

I'm curious about this as well. I always feel stupid looking at paintings because I don't know how long I'm supposed to spend looking at it, and even though they're supposed to evoke "subjective" feelings, I can't help but feel my feelings are objectively wrong.

Get Gardner's Art through the Ages for the best history of Art; usually quite expensive, but I got the 13th edition for £40. Pic related.

You don't need a book anon. just be confident in your own experience of the work. there's no "trick" or thing that you're missing. Just let yourself be influenced by the art. I would however recommend you watch the series 'This Is Modern Art' by Matthew Collings. I believe it's all on youtube.
It's a little dated now but I think it's still a very good series and the presenter is very witty.
