I just read the love song of Alfred J Prufrock, and honestly, it went over my head. I am I doomed to plebdom or is there anything I can do to understand Eliot?

Read about the poem and then revisit it, or see if there's something like a companion to it. Reading Moby Dick with a spark notes guide when I was a young lad was the single most pivotal experience in my literary development.

don't ask people to spoonfeed you their interpretations of it as it limits the art. It's a complicated poem there is no shame in not understanding it the first time. come up with an interpretation and come back here to discuss your own understanding and debate it with others. unique experiences and interpretations are the foundation of culture.

I'm don't feel I totally "get" it either, though I do like parts of it very much, and it's certainly inventive enough. I'm not sure if I should be looking for deep imagist techniques, or if it can be taken at mostly face value. Also, I would imagine the name J Alfred Prufrock has some significance - it is, after all, a pretty atypical name - but I can't fathom what it is.

how I approach difficult poetry:

re-read the poem word for word
mark words that seem important
try to make sense of it again

look up the author's biography and re-read the poem again while keeping his life in mind.

exchange verses with one another: if the poem now makes less sense that before, you know that you have missed something on your previous reads. Also, this will force you to think anout the individual verses outside of their original context. Afterwards, read the original poem once again

as a last resort, google for interpretations or buy a reading companion

And no, sorry, you are moderately retarded either way -- Prufrock is taught in 11th and 12th grade AP English classes, and many students are able to grasp it just fine.

Well, they understand it with a teacher guiding them through it. If you entirely understand a poem the first time reading it, with no guidance, it's not a very good poem.
