I'm looking for a female Chinese author that has been compared to Kafka. In general I would just like to be exposed to more contemporaries that explore similar styles and themes that Kafka wrote about.

I doubt it's still in the archives? It's such a shame since we are both probably thinking of the exact same author as OP is right now.

I can't even recall is she is still based in China, was just ethnically Chinese, or if she was a Chinese expat situated some place else.

I can't really think of anyone else like her. Read her interviews though for sure. There are a handful online.

You can also get a bunch of her books for like a dollar each used on amazon or the like. I just picked up a handful of them. Her short stories are really out there. They make you feel a little insane.

You're going to want to read Kobo Abe. For female Asians, Banana Yoshimoto is super qt too. I wouldn't liken her to Kafka, but she still has a very interesting, dreamy style.
