Reading sartre has made me realize that 4chan is better than tumblr for several reasons. tumblr relies on aesthetic and lives in bad faith due to their pseudo superiority. While 4chan is okay with showing how we really think and feel even if it is terrible. Thoughts?

I think that it is equally dangerous to believe that 4chan is sincere. Just look at the patrician culture that has developed here. It cultivates pretension.

On 4chan, unironic and ironic are indistinguishable. This is not a good thing. It is a universe of detached thoughts. Sincerity and authenticity ascribe motive to the speaker or writer. But in 4chan the speaker and writer do not exist. There is no sincerity or authenticity. There is simply a roiling mass and storm of thoughts and words.

I think on balance that is a good thing. The depersonalization of the author is in fact a very ancient sentiment ('sing, o muse!'), and is a good antidote to the modern fetish of identity, which is an expression of solipsistic and narcissistic modes of thought (and a reaction to the fact that the structures, institutions, and traditions that actually would help provide identity have largely been dissolved).
