I was only 10 when I started to read this and I never read very far...

here is what I remember:

It is a fantasy novel about wizards/magicians and master takes his apprentice to be trained in a school/academy. To be admitted to the school the boy must pass tests. Other details I remember are that wizards must never reveal their names and one of the tests the boy is subject to is a question "What is your name?/Who are you?"

Any ideas?
