his major debut was in 1989. I can happily say that I went the entirety of my undergraduate, masters, and PHD (all in philosophy) without having heard his name in a classroom setting even once.

Considering the incredibly disparate reports we receive from people studying in the fields of philosophy and literature in regards to who academia views as being of value and not being of value, this isn't a very good metric. I'm certain there's just as many anons who will say that their philosophy department loves Zizek or some shit.

I've done an MPhil at Cambridge and he was in fact mentioned a couple of times during lectures, in passing, but not necessarily in a dismissive sense.

Not that I have a firm grasp of what he's really about though.
